Pluck was formed by violinist Adrian Garratt in 2002 when he got together with violist Jon Regan and cellist Sian Kadifachi. The group’s theatre resume is a remarkable story. After an inaugural performance at the world famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Bar in London, Pluck took their show, ‘Musical Arson!’, to the Edinburgh Fringe 2003. Pluck stormed the festival, selling out two weeks of shows and winning the prestigious Tap Water Award for Cabaret. Directors John Fealey and Toby Sedgwick then came on board to develop ‘Musical Arson!’, which received rave reviews as the show toured Italy, Australia, Finland and the UK, returning to Edinburgh the following year where Pluck received the Spirit of the Fringe Award and again enjoyed a sell out run. In 2005, Pluck developed their second show, ‘The Specialists’, with celebrated director Cal McCrystal (Cirque du Soleil, Spymonkey, The Mighty Boosh). The new show was premiered in Edinburgh to sold out houses and received unanimous critical acclaim. Tours soon followed to Australia, Malaysia, Finland, the US, South Korea, Singapore, and around the UK. Pluck’s newest and biggest show yet, ‘The Titanic Show’, received its World Premiere at the Adelaide Fringe 2008. Pluck have once again teamed up with Cal McCrystal in their tribute to the legendary musicians on the Titanic. The show was a hit at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe, and is due to return to the US in Autumn 2010 having already enjoyed a three week run in Washington DC last spring. Alongside their theatre shows, Pluck’s tailor-made corporate shows have been enjoyed by clients from Russia, Korea, Taiwan and Slovenia as well as UK-based companies – Pluck have played at the Natural History Museum, the Dorchester and the British Library, to name but a few. Pluck’s street work has taken them to festivals in Slovenia, Italy, Ireland, Finland, and Australia. Like their theatre shows, Pluck’s street performances work with non-English speaking audiences, making their appeal universal. In early 2009, Flora Allison joined Pluck to cover Sian’s maternity leave; Sian and Flora now share the female roles. Meanwhile, Adrian left Pluck to pursue a solo career performing under the name Sid Bowfin, and was replaced by Kit Massey in January 2010. Pluck’s performers past and present are all classically trained musicians, but it is their comedic talents and shared desire to combine playing and entertaining that continues to make Pluck the remarkable phenomenon it is. |
